Aphthous ulcers, also known as canker sores and aphthous stomatitis, are a common type of ulcer that develops on the mucous membranes, usually in the oral cavity (mouth).

TYPES OF STOMACH ULCER

Minor aphthous ulcers

This is the most typical type of ulcer; it can appear as a single ulcer or in a cluster, is usually not painful, and has a diameter of less than 5 mm.

Major aphthous ulcers

These can be painful, especially when eating or drinking, are less common, usually 5 mm or larger, form singly or in pairs, and last for two weeks to several months.

Herpetiform ulcers

Herpetiform ulcers, so named because of their resemblance to herpes, are not caused by the herpes simplex virus; rather, they can develop when multiple pinpoint lesions converge to form large, irregularly shaped ulcers.

SYMPTOMS OF APTHOUS ULCER
