The term “spectrum” in autism spectrum disorder refers to the wide range of symptoms and severity. Autism spectrum disorder is a condition related to brain development that affects how a person perceives and interacts with others, leading to issues in social interaction and communication.

Autism, Asperger’s syndrome, childhood disintegrative disorder, and an unspecified type of pervasive developmental disorder are all conditions that were previously thought to be distinct conditions that make up autism spectrum disorder.

A small percentage of children appear to develop normally in the first year and then go through a period of regression between 18 and 24 months of age when they begin to show symptoms of autism. Autism spectrum disorder starts in early childhood and eventually results in difficulties functioning in society — socially, in school, and at work, for example.

Causes

Given the complexity of the disorder and the fact that symptoms and severity vary, there are likely many causes, and both genetics and environment may be important. Autism spectrum disorder has no single known cause.

Genetics. For some children, autism spectrum disorder can be linked to a genetic disorder like Rett syndrome or fragile X syndrome. For other children, genetic changes (mutations) may increase the risk of autism spectrum disorder. Still other genes may affect brain development or the way that brain cells communicate, or they may determine the severity of symptoms. Several different genes appear to be involved in autism spectrum disorder.

Environmental factors. At the moment, scientists are looking into the potential causes of autism spectrum disorder, including viruses, medications, pregnancy complications, and air pollution.

Symptoms

Other children may develop normally for the first few months or years of life, but then suddenly become withdrawn or aggressive or lose language skills they’ve already acquired. Signs typically are seen by age 2 years. Some children show early signs of autism spectrum disorder, such as reduced eye contact, lack of response to their name, or indifference to caregivers.

The severity of each autistic spectrum disorder in a child can range from low functioning to high functioning, and each child is likely to have a distinct pattern of behavior.

Other children with the disorder have normal to high intelligence; they learn quickly, but struggle to communicate, apply what they know in daily life, and adjust to social situations. Some children with autism spectrum disorder have difficulty learning, while some show signs of lower than normal intelligence.

The level of severity is usually based on the severity of the impairments and how they affect the ability to function, but because each child has a unique combination of symptoms, it can occasionally be challenging to assess.

The autistic spectrum disorder is manifested by the following common symptoms.

Social communication and interaction

A person with autism spectrum disorder, whether a child or an adult, may struggle with communication and social skills, which could include any of the following symptoms:

At times seems not to hear you when you call his or her name.

Refuses to be held and cuddled, and appears to prefer playing by themselves and withdrawing into their own world.

Fails to make eye contact and displays no emotion

Is mute, speaks slowly, or loses their ability to speak in full sentences or words

Has trouble starting or maintaining conversations, or only engages in them to ask for things or label things.

Speaks abnormally fast or slowly, sometimes with a sing-song or robotic-sounding voice.

Verbatim repetition of words or phrases, but lacks contextual understanding

Doesn’t seem to comprehend basic inquiries or instructions

Shows no sign of emotion or concern for the feelings of others and refrains from expressing these things

Doesn’t bring anything to demonstrate interest or point at it

Approaches social interaction in an inappropriate way by acting passive, hostile, or disruptive

Is unable to read nonverbal cues from others, such as their body language, tone of voice, or facial expressions.

Patterns of behavior

A person with autism spectrum disorder, whether a child or an adult, may exhibit any of the following signs:

Constantly makes the same motions, like hand flapping, spinning, or rocking

Engages in behaviors that could lead to self-harm, such as head-bashing or biting

Establishes a set of rituals or routines and becomes upset by even the smallest deviation from them.

Is uncoordinated or moves in an unusual way, like clumsily or on tiptoes, or displays unusual, stiff, or exaggerated body language

Is mesmerized by a thing’s small details, like the toy car’s spinning wheels, but is unaware of the thing’s larger significance or function.

Has unusually high sensitivity to touch, sound, and light but may not be bothered by pain or extreme temperatures

Does not partake in imitation or pretend play

Concentrates or intensifies attention on a stimulus in an abnormal way.

Has particular dietary preferences, such as eating just a few foods or shunning foods with a particular texture.

Risk factors

It’s unclear whether the rise in pediatric diagnoses of autism spectrum disorder is a result of improved identification and reporting, a real rise in the number of cases, or both.

Children of all racial and ethnic backgrounds are affected by autism spectrum disorder, but some risk factors can be identified, such as:

Your child’s sex.The risk of developing autism spectrum disorder is roughly four times higher in boys than in girls.

Family history. It’s not unusual for parents or family members of a child with autism spectrum disorder to engage in certain behaviors typical of the disorder or to have minor difficulties with social or communication skills themselves. Families who have one child with autism spectrum disorder are more likely to have another child with the disorder.

Other disorders.Children with certain medical conditions, such as fragile X syndrome, an inherited disorder that causes intellectual problems, tuberous sclerosis, a condition in which benign tumors develop in the brain, and Rett syndrome, a genetic disorder almost exclusively affecting females, which causes slowed head growth, intellectual disability, and loss of purposeful hand use, have a higher than average risk of developing autism spectrum disorder or autism-like symptoms.

Extremely preterm babies.Autism spectrum disorders may be more common in children born before 26 weeks of pregnancy.

·Parents’ ages.More studies are required to confirm this association, but it may exist between autism spectrum disorder and children born to older parents.

Complications

Communication, behavior, and social interaction issues may result in:

Obstacles to learning effectively and in school

· Employment problems

· Inability to live independently

· Social isolation

· Stress within the family

· Victimization and being bullied
