A tumor that affects the spine’s bones (vertebrae) is referred to as a vertebral tumor, while a spinal cord tumor, also known as an intradural tumor, starts within the spinal cord or the dura covering it.
There are two terms used to describe spinal tumors.
These basic areas are classified by the area of the spine where they occur.
- Cervical
- Thoracic
- Lumbar
- Sacrum.

Although they do not begin within the spinal cord itself,.these types of tumors may affect spinal cord function by causing spinal cord compression and other issues.
SYMPTOMS OF SPINAL CORD TUMOR
Signs and symptoms of spinal cord tumors can vary, particularly as they progress and affect the spinal cord, nerve roots, blood vessels, or vertebral bones of the spine.
- Tumor growth-related discomfort at the tumor site
- back pain that frequently spreads to other body parts
- Sensitivity to heat, cold, and pain diminishing
- losing the ability to urinate or eat
- inability to walk without falling occasionally
- Having nighttime back pain
- muscle weakness or loss of feeling, especially in the arms or legs
- Various parts of our bodies can experience muscle weakness that can range from mild to severe.
Back pain, which can also radiate to our hips, legs, feet, or arms, is a typical early symptom of spinal tumors. Over time, even while receiving treatment, back pain can also get worse.
Depending on the tumor type, spinal tumors advance at varying rates.
CAUSES OF SPINAL TUMOR
In some instances, however, spinal cord tumors are linked to known inherited syndromes, such as neurofibromatosis 2 and von Hippel-Lindau disease. The exact cause of spinal tumors is unknown. Experts suspect that defective genes play a role; however, it is usually not known whether such genetic defects are inherited or simply develop over time.
RISK FACTORS
A higher prevalence of spinal cord tumors is seen in:
- A person with neurofibromatosis 2 may experience progressive hearing loss in one or both ears as a result of benign tumors growing on or close to the hearing-related nerves.
- Von Hippel-Lindau disease.Hemangioblastomas, which are blood vessel tumors of the brain, retina, and spinal cord, as well as other tumors of the kidneys or adrenal glands, are linked to this uncommon, multisystem disorder.
COMPLICATIONS OF SPINAL CORD TUMOR
Compression of spinal nerves by tumors can result in changes in bowel and bladder function as well as a loss of movement or sensation below the site of the tumor. Nerve damage may be permanent.
A tumor that presses against the spinal cord itself may be life-threatening depending on its location, but depending on its detection and aggressive treatment, it may be possible to prevent further loss of function and regain nerve function.
