The medical term for these deposits is xanthelasma. These yellow spots may not be harmful at first, but they can gradually worsen and cause pain. They may also be a sign of a more serious underlying health problem. Yellow spots can develop around eyelids as a side effect of having high levels of cholesterol in blood.

The condition is uncommon, but it can occasionally develop in association with high blood levels of cholesterol or other fats, or even in the presence of normal cholesterol levels.

It affects more middle-aged or older people than younger people, and affects more women than men.

SYMPTOMS OF XANTHELESMA

Xanthelasma are fatty plaques that develop symmetrically between your eyes and nose and are yellowish-white lumps of fatty material that have accumulated under the skin on the inner portions of your upper and lower eyelids.

They can gradually grow larger over time and cause discomfort, but they usually don’t need to be removed unless they become uncomfortable or for cosmetic reasons. These lesions and plaques don’t impair the function of your eyelids, meaning they shouldn’t affect your ability to blink, open, or close your eyes.

CAUSES OF XANTHELESMA

Anyone can develop cholesterol deposits around their eyes, but those who suffer from the lipid disorder dyslipidemia, in which there are excessive levels of triglycerides and certain types of cholesterol in the bloodstream, are more likely to develop this condition.

If you experience any of the following symptoms, you may have dyslipidemia:

  • With a total cholesterol level over 200 mg/dL, a person is said to have hypercholesterolemia.
  • Triglyceride levels over 150 mg/dL are a sign of hypertriglyceridemia.
  • LDL above 100 mg/dL, also known as “bad cholesterol,” is a sign of high levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL).
  • High-density lipoprotein (HDL), or “good cholesterol,” levels are indicated by HDL levels above 40 mg/dL.

The development of xanthelasma around the eye can result from a number of factors, some of which are genetic, making it difficult to prevent them, while others are lifestyle choices or medication side effects.

GENETIC CAUSE

  • failure to produce enough of the lipid-degrading enzyme familial lipoprotein lipase
  • Due to a genetic condition called familial hypertriglyceridemia, people have blood triglycerides that are higher than normal.
  • Having a genetic disorder called familial dyslipoproteinemia results in an increase in lipid levels in the blood.

LIFE STYLE FACTORS

  • Saturated fat-heavy diets with little to no unsaturated fat
  • Excess alcohol consumption
  • Lack of cardiovascular exercise
  • Weight gain
  • Diet low in fiber
  • Smoking

MEDICATIONS

  • Beta-blockers
  • Oral contraceptives
  • Estrogen-containing medications
  • Corticosteroids
  • Retinoids
  • Thiazide diuretics
  • Protease inhibitors
  • Anabolic steroids
  • Antiepileptic drugs

Sometimes the cause of dyslipidemia is unknown, and some conditions, such as kidney disease, hypothyroidism, and diabetes mellitus, can increase the blood lipid concentration, which can also contribute to the development of cholesterol deposits.
